AkzoNobel has introduced a new waterborne wood coating with 20% bio-based content, enhancing the use of renewable raw materials without sacrificing performance.

Developed by the company’s Sikkens Wood Coatings division, RUBBOL WF 3350 is a sprayable opaque coating that highlights AkzoNobel’s commitment to innovation and sustainability. This advanced solution ensures superior quality and durability while supporting the shift toward more eco-friendly products.

"By utilizing bio-based raw materials, we're not only helping to reduce our environmental impact, but also paving the way for a more circular economy in the wood coatings industry, while supporting our customers on their own sustainability journey,” says Tessa Slagter, Sustainable Innovation Manager at AkzoNobel.

Adds Jim Kavanagh, Director of AkzoNobel’s Industrial Coatings business: “We've successfully developed a product containing bio-based materials that matches the high performance standards of equivalent coatings, ensuring that beauty and value endure, even in the harshest weather conditions. It represents a step forward in coatings technology which showcases our leading-edge R&D capability and aligns perfectly with the company’s commitment to sustainable innovation.”

RUBBOL WF 3350 is developed and manufactured at AkzoNobel’s Malmö site in Sweden and is designed for both interior and exterior applications. It is supported by the Sikkens Wood Coatings Extralife warranty program, providing end-users with added confidence in its durability and performance. This aligns with the growing use of wood as a key material in modern building design.

The product’s bio-based content has been externally verified through C-14 testing, following ASTM International’s standard methods (ASTM D6866, Method B). The renewable materials used are derived from plants, reinforcing AkzoNobel’s commitment to sustainable solutions.

Beyond wood coatings, AkzoNobel is integrating bio-based content across its portfolio. The company already supplies bio-based paint for the interior of KIA Motors’ EV9 electric SUV and has launched the Angel edition of the Dulux Anndru series in China—an innovative wall paint composed of 48% bio-based ingredients that also helps improve indoor air quality.
