Carnival Cruise Line, one of the world's largest and most influential cruise brands, has adopted Jotun's Hull Skating Solutions (HSS) for its vessel Carnival Pride, signalling a significant step forward for the cruise industry. The technology enables proactive hull cleaning, helping maintain a consistently clean hull throughout regular cruise operations. By improving hull performance, HSS reduces fuel consumption, lowers carbon emissions, and minimises the spread of invasive aquatic species, supporting both operational efficiency and marine biodiversity.

"Maintaining a clean hull is essential for efficient ship operations, and the Hull Skating Solutions allows us to take a more proactive approach to hull maintenance," said Jari Oinas, AVP of fuel performance and decarbonisation at Carnival Cruise Line. "As we evaluate the technology aboard Carnival Pride, we see strong potential to support ship performance while advancing our long-term sustainability goals."

Carnival Cruise Line has become the first cruise operator to introduce Jotun's robotic hull cleaning solution, marking the debut of the global marine coatings leader's technology in the cruise sector.

“Carnival is demonstrating real leadership by embracing new technology that ensures consistently clean hulls and reduced environmental impact,” says Stein Kjølberg, Regional Vice President Americas for Jotun. “With our 100-year long track record in hull performance, and with presence in the US for over 50 years, we are proud to support an American icon that is both ambitious and forward‑leaning.”

The agreement includes Jotun's HullSkater robotic cleaning device, compatible hull coatings, continuous hull monitoring and inspections, and digital reporting solutions that provide real-time hull performance insights. Supported by Jotun's Always Clean Hull guarantee, the solution was recently verified by DNV, confirming that vessels using Hull Skating Solutions (HSS) can keep their hulls consistently clean without any measurable loss in speed.

For cruise operators, the ability to inspect and clean the hull between voyages offers significant operational and environmental benefits. Maintaining a consistently clean hull helps improve fuel efficiency, minimise speed loss, and reduce the risk of transporting invasive aquatic species between different ports and marine ecosystems.

Stein Kjølberg in Jotun applauds Carnivals willingness to challenge and disrupt. “Our clean shipping commitment is dependent on collaborations with partners who dare to innovate.”
