Market Overview

The global general industrial coatings market reached around 9.9 million metric tonnes in 2025, a marginal increase compared to the volumes sold from 2024. All regions experienced volume growth with Asia-Pacific witnessing slightly better growth as compared to the other regions. The Asia-Pacific region accounts for the large majority of the market.

When looking at the global market by segment, road marking accounts for the largest volume but a much smaller share of the market value given its low price compared to the other segments. The coil & extrusion followed by the metal packaging segment have the highest average price whereas the general finishes segment generated the largest share of the value.

The increase in environmental awareness and promotion of the low-VOC regulations have led to an increase in water-based over the past decades although solvent-based still account for the large majority of the market for most segments.

Powder continues to gain share across segments due to its high performance and VOC regulations. The resin type within powder technologies differs across segments. For instance, hybrid powder resins dominate the 3C segment whereas in the general finishes segment powder polyurethanes, pure acrylics, epoxies and polyesters all have considerable shares.
