IRL has finalised the publication of our coating segment reports which were published between April and October 2025. Based on our findings, in 2024 the global market remained relatively flat with the sales volumes reaching 57.8 million metric tonnes. Europe and Middle East & Africa regions have lost share over the last 10 years with Asia-Pacific gaining share of the market whilst the Americas region share remained flat.

In terms of market value, there was a small increase in 2024 to €190.3 billion ($206.0 billion) revenue generated by the market, implying an average price of €3.29 ($3.56) per kilo. The majority of the market value comes from the architectural segment, followed by the automotive, general industrial and protective segments.

Water-based and powder continue to gain share at the expense of solvent-based as regulations have pushed for the transition to more environmental friendly coatings. Segments such as protective, automotive and general industrial have seen a strong shift away from solvent-based over the last 10 years.

Regarding the resin types, pure acrylic and styrene accounts for the largest volumes across the different application systems. Epoxies and polyurethanes have also large shares and have benefitted from the shift towards more environmental friendly solutions on the industrial coatings side. Thermoplastic is included as road marking coatings part of the general industrial segment.
