Market Overview
The global marine coatings market reached around 1.5 million metric tonnes in 2024, a moderate increase compared to the volumes sold from 2023. All regions experienced growth mainly driven by the new build sector which experienced a strong expansion. The Asia-Pacific region accounts for around three-quarters of the market demand with China, South Korea and Japan being the largest shipbuilding nations in the world.
In terms of market value, there was an increase in 2024 to €9.0 billion ($9.8 billion) revenue generated by the market, implying an average price of €5.9 ($6.4) per kilo. The majority of the market value comes from the Asia-Pacific region, followed by the Americas and Europe.
The increase in environmental awareness and promotion of the low-VOC regulations have led to an increase in water-based over the past decades although solvent-based still account for the large majority of the market.
Epoxies remain the largest resin type followed by polyurethanes and acrylics.
