PPG announced the expansion of its easy-open end coatings for aluminium beverage cans to address rising global demand. Designed specifically for can lids, these coatings help maintain beverage taste, quality, and shelf life while improving manufacturing efficiency. Formulated without bisphenol A (BPA) and PFAS, the coatings meet global regulatory standards and have been extensively tested and approved by major international can makers and beverage brands.
The expanded range of easy-open end coatings includes the following items:
PPG INNOVEL® PRO PPG2489 series: A high-performance internal coating engineered for high-speed stamping lines. It withstands extreme temperature and pressure conditions, making it suitable for a wide variety of beverages.
PPG INNOVEL® EVO PPG6720 series: A waterborne internal coating optimised for beer cans. It supports low film weight applications, delivers reduced volatile organic compounds (VOCs) compared to solvent-based alternatives, and meets quality, performance, and regulatory standards—making it a sustainability-focused solution.
PPG iSENSE® PPG5018 series: A resilient external coating designed for fast production lines, available in both clear and gold finishes.
“Our beverage end coating solutions address critical challenges in the beverage industry while meeting food contact regulations,” said Viktoria Tager, PPG global easy-open ends strategic market manager, Packaging Coatings. "Our latest solutions maintain performance across a diverse range of beverage products and manufacturing processes, making them a proven and reliable choice for the metal packaging industry.”
Key highlights of the three coatings include:
Sustainability Advantages: These coatings support higher line speeds, improved productivity, and reduced waste. Notably, PPG Innovel PRO PPG2489 can cut carbon emissions by up to 20% through lower film weight application.
Regulatory Compliance: All coatings are free from bisphenol A (BPA-NI) and per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS-NI), ensuring compliance with evolving food contact material regulations worldwide.
Localised Manufacturing: With production facilities in North America, Europe, and Asia-Pacific, PPG minimises transportation costs and supports a more efficient supply chain for customers.
Process Versatility: These coatings are compatible with a wide range of coil coating and canmaking processes and are suitable for both two-piece and three-piece aluminium beverage cans.
Robust Performance: Designed to handle high-speed stamping and demanding processes like hot-fill, retort, and pasteurisation without compromising integrity.
Global Line Adaptability: Engineered to deliver consistent performance across diverse production lines, helping streamline operations for manufacturers with multiple locations.
Proven Protection: PPG Innovel PRO PPG2489 and PPG iSense PPG5018 effectively protect against flavour migration, corrosion, and aggressive beverage formulations, including beer, seltzers, carbonated soft drinks, sparkling water, wine, juices, energy drinks, cocktails, and other “hard-to-hold” drinks.
