PPG Launches Ultrafiltration Antifouling Membrane for Water Treatment

PPG has announced the addition of an ultrafiltration (UF) antifouling membrane to its portfolio of spiral-wound filter elements for industrial water purification and treatment. Designed to address the rising demand for sustainable UF filtration solutions, the new membrane is engineered to treat challenging water sources containing various oily wastes and other contaminants, allowing for safe and cost-effective disposal or reuse.

The new UF membrane incorporates a super-hydrophobic surface that repels water and resists fouling from trace oils, grease, and other stubborn contaminants. This fouling resistance helps extend the membrane's lifespan, reduce maintenance costs, and minimise downtime in some of the most demanding industrial applications. Unlike many UF and microfiltration (MF) membranes on the market, PPG’s entire portfolio is made from a proprietary composite material that contains no intentionally added polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS).

“Our customers face increasing pressure to reduce costs and operate more sustainably,” said Lisa Walters, PPG strategic market manager, filtration, Speciality Products. “This new membrane delivers on both fronts, providing exceptional performance in oily, high-fouling environments such as bilge water treatment, while reducing maintenance requirements and extending membrane life. It also supports cost-effective water reuse, helping customers reduce reliance on external water supplies, but also supports efforts to address global water scarcity challenges.”

The UF membrane is suitable for a range of applications, including offshore and onshore oil-water separation, marine ship treatment in dry dock and in water, industrial process water and wastewater management, automotive and industrial paint lines, and greywater treatment. To meet increasing market demand, PPG has invested in advanced equipment and technology at its Barberton, Ohio, facility for membrane production.

PPG’s high-performance microfiltration (MF) and ultrafiltration (UF) membranes efficiently remove oil, grease, and emulsified contaminants from industrial process water at higher throughputs than conventional membranes. This enhances water recovery for reuse, reduces the number of filters and required floor space, improves cleanability, and ensures long-term durability.
