Market Overview

The global protective coatings market reached around 8.5 million metric tonnes in 2025, a moderate increase compared to the volumes sold from 2024. All regions experienced growth except Europe which saw a flat market. The Asia-Pacific region accounts for the large majority of the market with China alone accounting for more than half of the global sales.

In terms of market value, there was a slight increase in 2025 to €31.0 billion ($36.5 billion) revenue generated by the market, implying an average price of €3.6 ($4.2) per kilo. The majority of the market value comes from the Asia-Pacific region, followed by the Americas and Europe.

The increase in environmental awareness and promotion of the low-VOC regulations have led to an increase in water-based over the past decades although solvent-based still account for the large majority of the market.

Powder have been gaining share mostly on the industrial and ACE machinery segments but the overall volumes still remain small.

Epoxies remain the largest resin type followed by polyurethanes and acrylics.
