In a significant scientific achievement, the Rubber Research Institute of India (RRII), operating under the Rubber Board, has developed a high-quality, eco-friendly paint derived from natural rubber latex. This innovative formula reportedly exceeds the performance standards of conventional emulsion paints currently on the market.
The breakthrough was achieved by a team of rubber technology experts led by Senior Scientist Shera Mathew after nearly 18 months of dedicated research and testing. The team successfully created an entirely environment-friendly paint using natural latex, seashells, natural clay, and plant extracts. According to RRII, the new paint is VOC-free, water-based, and safe for human health, offering a sustainable alternative with no known health risks.
Since natural plant extracts can also be incorporated for coloration, all commonly used interior shades can be produced without relying on synthetic chemicals. The fact that natural latex forms the principal raw material adds further significance to the development, especially from a sustainability and farmer-centric standpoint, Mathew said.
The innovation originated from the Rubber Products Incubation Centre (RPIC), which operates under the technical consultancy division of RRII. The official launch and technology transfer ceremony is scheduled to be inaugurated by V. N. Vasavan, Minister for Ports, Cooperation, and Devaswom, on December 23 at the Silver Jubilee Hall of the RRII Headquarters in Kottayam. The event will be presided over by Chandy Oommen, MLA.
