Sun Chemical Packaging and Graphics has announced a price increase across its range of nitrocellulose-containing products in Latin America, citing ongoing and substantial rises in nitrocellulose input costs. The revised pricing will take effect immediately or in line with the terms outlined in existing customer agreements. The extent of the increase will vary depending on the specific product and its nitrocellulose content.
Nitrocellulose is a key raw material used in solvent-based printing inks, and its global supply has tightened considerably in recent months. Rising geopolitical tensions — particularly the ongoing conflict in Ukraine — along with increased pressure on European countries to boost defence spending, have significantly elevated demand for nitrocellulose in military applications. As Europe accelerates its rearmament efforts, greater volumes of nitrocellulose are being allocated for defence purposes, limiting its availability for industrial uses and driving notable price increases across various sectors.
Recent developments within the industry further underscore the tightening supply situation. In April 2025, Rheinmetall acquired Hagedorn‑NC, with plans to transition its industrial production lines toward military-grade output. Similarly, in November 2024, Czechoslovak Group (CSG) acquired the nitrocellulose business of International Flavours & Fragrances (IFF) and announced intentions to expand capacity for energetic-grade nitrocellulose used in defence applications. Together, these developments highlight a broader global shift in nitrocellulose supply toward military channels, further constraining availability for industrial markets.
“We continue to experience extraordinary increases in raw material costs, making price adjustments unavoidable,” said Fernando Tavara, President of Sun Chemical Packaging and Graphics Latin America. “Our priority remains ensuring supply continuity and supporting our customers through these challenging market conditions.”
Sun Chemical continues to address these market pressures through operational efficiency initiatives and close coordination with its supplier network. Customers will be contacted directly with detailed information regarding the specific pricing adjustments applicable to their respective product portfolios.
In addition, Sun Chemical provides a comprehensive portfolio of nitrocellulose-alternative technologies, including inks, coatings, and adhesives designed for both flexographic and rotogravure printing applications. These solutions support sustainability objectives and help address evolving recycling requirements.
