AkzoNobel Develops Single Spray Powder Coatings Technology for EV Battery Systems
AkzoNobel's Resicoat brand has developed innovative powder coating technology that offers greater electrical protection for electric vehicle (EV) battery systems with a single spray.
There is a rising need in the EV industry for coatings with increased dielectric strength to aid improve battery system safety. The company's Powder Coatings division has responded to this difficulty by developing a solution that enables clients to achieve the needed film thickness with a single spray, therefore increasing efficiency and production.
The new technology, which is now available in China, is appropriate for battery system components such as cooling plates, side plates, and battery covers.
"We've developed innovative technology which addresses a clear need within the industry and helps to improve safety," says Jeff Jirak, Director of AkzoNobel's Powder Coatings division. "It's an important breakthrough which means customers no longer have to spray twice or more to achieve the right thickness for providing high dielectric strength."
The technology's ability to produce a consistent film with a single application also makes the whole process more efficient in terms of boosting speed and production capacity, lowering man hours, and enhancing asset usage.
"Thanks to decades of knowledge and non-stop innovation, we understand how exceptional powder coatings, combined with the right application technique, can provide consistent electrical insulation throughout the life of key battery system components," Jirak says. "It's further proof of our commitment to supporting our customers through partnerships and product development to create, fuel and protect the innovations of the future."
In addition to improving the safety of EV battery systems, AkzoNobel's recently developed one-spray technology is resistant to heat stress, water immersion, and chemicals.
Jirak adds, “Working with customers throughout the value chain has put us in a unique position to understand the needs of the market. Our strong global footprint means they can benefit from our ability to deliver consistency in product and service worldwide.”
Since the 1960s, AkzoNobel's Resicoat powder coatings have helped to tackle the difficulty of electrical insulation in a variety of sectors. In 2023, a new line of Resicoat EV powder coatings was introduced, particularly developed to enhance the safety and performance of EV components like as battery systems and electric motors.
