Market Overview

The global architectural coatings market reached around 33.5 million metric tonnes in 2024, a slight increase in the volumes sold from 2023. All regions experienced growth except Europe which saw a volume decline. The negative construction output in Europe affected sales in this region.

In terms of market value, there was an increase in 2024 to €77.3 billion ($83.6 billion) revenue generated by the market, implying an average price of €2.3 ($2.5) per kilo. The majority of the market value comes from the Asia-Pacific region, followed by the Americas and Europe.

The increase in environmental awareness and promotion of the low-VOC concept at national levels resulted in water-based products occupying the dominant share with almost 84% of the total market in 2024.

More than half of the global architectural water-based market consists of styrene-acrylic, vinyl and vinyl acetate technologies, having gained their position given their low cost. On the solvent-based side, alkyds dominate the market.
