  • Renewable electricity is a critical driver for enabling low-CO₂ manufacturing.

  • Plans are underway to further expand energy-efficiency initiatives on a global scale.

  • These measures help reduce Scope 2 emissions while enhancing the product carbon footprint of coating solutions for customers.

As part of its Carbon Management Roadmap, BASF Coatings has completed the planned transition of its European production sites to renewable electricity. In France, the company will continue to utilise the country’s low-CO₂ national power mix. This achievement represents an important milestone in its sustainability journey, while also enabling BASF Coatings to support automotive and other industry customers in meeting their climate and ESG objectives.

The use of renewable electricity across BASF Coatings’ European plants is a key component of a broader global strategy to reduce CO₂ emissions. Collectively, these measures play a significant role in lowering the company’s long-term production-related emissions. Building on this milestone, BASF Coatings is advancing the transformation of its global production network, with selected sites in North America and Asia already transitioned to renewable electricity.

“Completing the transition in our European production shows that we are pursuing our climate targets with consistency. By 2030, we aim to cut our specific CO₂ emissions by 40 percent,” said Dr. Markus Piepenbrink, Head of Sustainability at BASF Coatings. “At the same time, using renewable energy lowers the Product Carbon Footprint of our coating solutions. This enables our customers to manufacture and launch products with a reduced CO₂ footprint.”

Transitioning to renewable electricity significantly lowers Scope 2 emissions, while improvements in energy and material efficiency drive additional CO₂ reductions across industrial value chains.
