Green Building Certification

Introduction

Globally, the construction industry is increasingly shifting toward sustainability, driven by stricter environmental regulations, rising awareness of climate change, and growing demand for healthier indoor environments. Green building certification programmes such as U.S. Green Building Council’s LEED, Building Research Establishment’s BREEAM, and the International WELL Building Institute’s WELL are encouraging the adoption of environmentally responsible materials in construction projects.

Among these materials, eco-friendly and high-performance coatings have become increasingly important. Coatings play a crucial role in improving building durability, indoor air quality, and energy efficiency, making them essential components in sustainable construction.

Growing Importance of Green Building Certifications

Green building certifications assess structures based on various sustainability parameters, including energy efficiency, resource management, indoor environmental quality, and material sustainability. As developers and building owners aim to achieve higher certification ratings, the use of environmentally compliant materials—such as low-VOC coatings, waterborne paints, and sustainable surface treatments—has increased significantly.

Certification systems typically provide credits for products that contribute to improved indoor air quality and reduced environmental impact. This has prompted architects, contractors, and developers to select coatings that meet strict environmental standards while maintaining high performance.

Role of Coatings in Sustainable Buildings

Coatings serve multiple functions in buildings beyond aesthetics. They provide surface protection, durability, and environmental performance, which are key factors considered in green construction projects.

Eco-friendly coatings contribute to sustainable buildings in several ways:

  • Reduced VOC emissions, improving indoor air quality

  • Enhanced durability, reducing maintenance and repainting frequency

  • Improved energy efficiency through reflective and thermal coatings

  • Lower environmental footprint through sustainable raw materials

These advantages have made environmentally friendly coatings an essential part of modern green building design.

Key Eco-Friendly Coating Technologies

The transition toward sustainable construction has accelerated the development of several environmentally responsible coating technologies.

  1. Low-VOC and Zero-VOC Coatings: Low-VOC and zero-VOC coatings are designed to minimise emissions of volatile organic compounds during application and curing. These coatings help improve indoor air quality and are widely used in residential, commercial, healthcare, and educational facilities.

  2. Waterborne Coatings: Waterborne coatings have gained significant popularity due to their reduced solvent content and lower environmental impact. They offer improved safety during application and have become widely adopted in architectural and infrastructure projects.

  3. Powder Coatings: Powder coatings are another environmentally friendly alternative that generates few to no VOC emissions. These coatings are known for their high durability, corrosion resistance, and efficient material utilisation.

  4. Bio-Based Coatings: Bio-based coatings utilise renewable raw materials such as plant oils, natural resins, and other bio-derived components. These coatings reduce reliance on petrochemical feedstocks while supporting sustainable material sourcing.

Market Implications for the Coatings Industry

The expansion of green building initiatives is significantly influencing the global coatings market. As sustainability becomes a key priority for construction projects, manufacturers are investing heavily in research and development to create coatings that meet both environmental and performance requirements.

Several trends are emerging in the coatings industry as a result:

  • Increased adoption of waterborne and low-VOC formulations

  • Growing demand for high-performance coatings with sustainability credentials

  • Development of energy-efficient coatings such as cool roof coatings and reflective paints

  • Integration of smart coatings with antimicrobial or self-cleaning properties

These developments highlight the evolving role of coatings as functional materials that support sustainable infrastructure development.

Several leading coatings manufacturers have introduced sustainable coating solutions in recent years to support greener construction and environmental standards. AkzoNobel has developed products such as the Interpon Eco+ powder coatings portfolio, including Interpon D1036 Low-E and Interpon D2525 Super Durable Low-E, which reduce curing temperatures, improve durability, and help lower the overall carbon footprint. The company also showcased Dulux Professional paints and coating technologies at the Singapore International Green Building Conference 2025 to promote sustainable building development.

Similarly, PPG Industries has launched eco-friendly products such as PPG AQUAPON, an ultra-low-VOC waterborne epoxy for flooring, and PPG ENVIROCRON powder coatings, which offer low emissions and improved energy efficiency while supporting green building certifications like LEED and BREEAM.

In addition, Jotun offers sustainable coating solutions, including Majestic EcoHealth and Jotashield Antifade Colours, which emphasise low emissions, durability, and lifecycle sustainability to help buildings meet international green building standards.

Challenges and Future Opportunities

Despite strong growth potential, the adoption of eco-friendly coatings still faces several challenges, including higher raw material costs, technological limitations in extreme environments, and the need for continuous product innovation.

However, ongoing advancements in green chemistry, resin technology, and coating application methods are expected to address these challenges. As governments implement stricter environmental policies and developers increasingly prioritise sustainable construction, demand for eco-friendly coatings will continue to grow.
