Siegwerk Druckfarben AG & Co. KGaA, a leading global supplier of printing inks and coatings for packaging and labels, has signed an agreement to acquire Allinova, a speciality chemicals manufacturer based in Hengelo, the Netherlands. Renowned for its strong expertise in coating technologies, Allinova specialises in the formulation and production of water-based dispersions. Its globally recognised product range—including polymer dispersions, wax emulsions, and adhesives—will serve as a valuable complement to Siegwerk's portfolio of packaging coatings.
"Allinova’s solutions fit perfectly into our product portfolio and accelerate our mission to provide innovative and sustainable coating solutions for the global packaging market," says Gilles Le Moigne, Business Head of Circular Economy Coatings (CEC) at Siegwerk. "The acquisition will enable us to combine Allinova’s technical capabilities and expertise with our global reach and in-depth market knowledge." This acquisition marks an important step in Siegwerk’s global growth strategy, broadening its expertise from converters to include papermill and film manufacturing operations. By combining Allinova’s advanced coating technologies with its extensive technical know-how, Siegwerk will be well-equipped to provide innovative, application-tailored solutions that address the changing needs of these sectors.
"We are delighted to have found a great partner and new shareholder for Allinova. Siegwerk will integrate our expertise into a significantly larger organisation, thus advancing our products in the global market," says Gijs Elfrink, founder and owner of Allinova. Founded in 2005, the company initially specialised in developing and selling flame retardants and wax emulsions. The arrival of Bob Horsthuis as co-owner in 2016 spurred accelerated growth, with Allinova’s portfolio evolving over the past decade into a well-rounded range of high-quality dispersions and wax emulsions for packaging, alongside other products such as flame retardants, repellents, crosslinkers, and speciality chemicals. Following the acquisition, both Gijs Elfrink and Bob Horsthuis will continue to be part of the team.
In April 2024, Siegwerk launched a new global business unit focused on functional coatings to drive sustainable packaging innovations aligned with the principles of a circular economy. “By acquiring Allinova, Siegwerk is doubling down on our global expertise in the area of functional coatings and therefore strengthening our position to serve our customers even better as an enabler of circular packaging solutions across all applications and technologies,” explains Nicolas Wiedmann, CEO of Siegwerk. Today, the CEC unit serves as a cross-divisional hub of excellence for circular solutions, adding specialised functional coating technologies to the company’s conventional coating offerings. “With the acquisition of Allinova, we are now further expanding this technological expertise in the field of functional coatings, paving the way for even more packaging innovations in the future,” adds Wiedmann.
This latest acquisition builds on a series of strategic investments Siegwerk has made in recent years to reinforce its position as a comprehensive provider of inks and coatings for the packaging sector. In 2022, the company acquired La Sorgente, a leading Italian ink supplier for flexographic printing, particularly in flexible packaging and paper and board applications. Such targeted acquisitions have allowed Siegwerk to broaden its global presence and strengthen its core expertise in packaging printing.
