UK Launches Sustainable Coatings Network to Drive Circular Materials Innovation
The UK Network+ for Sustainable Coatings has received £1.38 million in funding from the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC). Led by Northumbria University and Newcastle University, the initiative will bring together universities, businesses and government to promote innovation in sustainable coatings and advanced surface technologies.
The network aims to reduce the use of hazardous chemicals and fossil-based materials, improve resource efficiency, encourage recycling and extend product lifetimes. It will support research projects, testing and the use of digital technologies and artificial intelligence (AI) to develop more sustainable, high-performance coatings.
The initiative will also strengthen collaboration between industry, researchers and policymakers to accelerate the development of environmentally friendly materials. It supports the UK's strategy to promote sustainable materials and reduce the environmental impact of products such as paints, coatings, inks and adhesives.
