UPM Specialty Papers and Michelman Launch a New Generation of Structures for High Performance, Recyclable Paper Packaging

UPM Specialty Papers and Michelman collaborated to develop three cutting-edge solutions that enable brand owners to replace multi-material, non-recyclable packaging with paper-based alternatives that fulfill food contact and recyclability standards.

Thierry Van Migem, Michelman's Sales Director for EMEA said, “UPM's papers provide a perfect foundation for our water-based barrier and heat seal coatings. Working closely with them for many years has allowed our combined team to increase the performance threshold of fiber-based substrates while maintaining recyclability. These new solutions will allow the market to accelerate its transition to more sustainable packaging.”

One of the most fascinating outcomes is a high barrier packaging material that blends UPM Solide Lucent base paper with three Michelman water-based coatings, providing substantial oxygen and moisture vapor barriers with heat-sealability. This makes it excellent for high-demand items like chocolate and coffee.

A second invention provides improved barrier qualities that are appropriate for frozen meals. The idea combines UPM Asendo or UPM Asendo Pro barrier papers with Michelman's next-generation heat-sealable barrier coatings to achieve great effectiveness.

A third breakthrough approach has greatly increased resistance to water vapor and grease. Michelman's VaporCoat 2240 coating enhances the barrier qualities of UPM Asendo and UPM Asendo Pro papers, making it ideal for inner liners in corrugated cardboard boxes.

All three constructions were assessed for recyclability using the PTS RH 021/97 Cat II technique.

Esa Saukkonen, Manager, Packaging Portfolio Development, UPM R&D mentioned, “We are very excited about the possibilities these three concepts can offer to brands and converters to replace multi-material packaging structures that are difficult to recycle. Collaborations such as these are crucial for innovating new, recyclable, fiber-based packaging solutions.”
