BASF has expanded its manufacturing operations in the United States to produce Licity® anode binders, supporting the fast-growing lithium-ion battery market. With this new capability, BASF can now supply its Licity portfolio globally across all regions. The company expects that reliable access to local raw materials and global product availability will continue to be key concerns for battery manufacturers and OEMs in the coming years.
The Licity portfolio builds on BASF’s established styrene-butadiene rubber (SBR) production network and reinforces the company’s deep technical expertise. BASF currently manufactures SBR binders for electric vehicle batteries at sites in Jiangsu and Guangdong, China; Ludwigshafen, Germany; and Hamina, Finland. With the latest expansion, BASF has added new production capabilities in Monaca, Pennsylvania, and Chattanooga, Tennessee.
Anode binders, though small in quantity, play a crucial role in battery performance and stability. BASF’s water-based anode binders provide a sustainable solution, delivering reliable, high-quality performance. These advanced binders enhance battery capacity, improve cycle stability, and help reduce charging time. The Licity binders can be tailored to meet diverse technical needs—whether for pure graphite or silicon-containing anodes—and are suitable for a wide range of applications, including electric vehicles, energy storage systems, and consumer electronics.
BASF is committed to offering North American customers a product portfolio that evolves in step with the fast-changing battery market.
“This is an important step for the North American battery industry,” said Denise Hartmann, Senior Vice President of Dispersions & Resins Americas at BASF. “With the expansion of manufacturing capability for Licity anode binders in the United States, we are pleased to now support the growth of our customers in all regions of the world.”
BASF’s binders are engineered to address various challenges associated with lithium-ion batteries. These waterborne binders offer high colloidal stability and are highly compatible with co-binders like carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC). Known for their excellent processability and superior coating performance, BASF’s binders also deliver exceptional mechanical and electrochemical properties.
