PPG Launches New Waterborne Automotive Coatings Facility in Thailand

PPG has announced the opening of a new waterborne automotive coatings manufacturing plant in Samut Prakan, Thailand. The facility will boost PPG’s local production capacity for waterborne basecoats and primers, supporting the growing demand from automotive manufacturers in Southeast Asia for more sustainable coating solutions.

The state-of-the-art facility, capable of producing 2,000 tonnes annually, includes an automated spray application centre designed to strengthen PPG’s service capabilities and enhance its global competitiveness in the automotive coatings sector. The plant’s launch was celebrated on March 20 with a special event attended by PPG executives and regional automotive manufacturers.

“Southeast Asia is experiencing rapid growth in the automotive sector. With the Thai government’s support for electric vehicles presenting vast opportunities for global automakers, including Chinese OEMs, we saw the need to expand our operations,” said Alisha Bellezza, PPG senior vice president, Automotive OEM Coatings. “This opening is a significant milestone, underscoring PPG's commitment to sustainability and highlighting its strategic focus on the Southeast Asian market.”

As Chinese automakers expand into global markets, including Thailand, investments like this new plant enable PPG to support customers with localised production and technical expertise. PPG has built strong partnerships with leading Asian automakers, including Chinese brands such as BYD and Chery.

The facility is the latest in a series of strategic investments by PPG to support the automotive industry, including the 2024 announcement of its first new manufacturing plant in the U.S. in over 15 years.
