DIC Corporation has established a new production facility in Jakarta, Indonesia, at the site of its wholly owned subsidiary, PT. DIC Graphics, to manufacture coatings designed for direct food contact materials. This facility is the first of its kind worldwide operated by an inks manufacturer to be developed in line with the principles of Hazard Analysis Critical Control Point (HACCP), a globally recognised food safety management system. (According to DIC’s analysis, the Company has applied for HACCP certification.) With this achievement, the facility has attained a food safety management standard on par with that of mainstream food product manufacturers. Targeting an annual output of 1,000 tonnes by fiscal year 2030, the facility will serve markets across Asia, including the People’s Republic of China, as well as Oceania, supporting the DIC Group’s efforts to address the growing demand for sustainable packaging.

To ensure the highest standards of safety and quality for coatings used in direct food contact materials, the new production facility has been equipped with advanced features such as air showers, high-efficiency particulate air (HEPA) filter dusters, and antibacterial flooring. The facility has also obtained certification for compliance with Indonesia’s halal regulations and adheres to the World Health Organisation’s Good Manufacturing Practices (GMP), ensuring that products like food and pharmaceuticals meet stringent quality and safety requirements. Strategically located in Indonesia, the site is well positioned to serve as an export hub for Asia and Oceania, and DIC is evaluating opportunities for future expansion of the facility.

With the global shift toward a circular economy, reducing plastic use and adopting reusable materials has become increasingly critical. Traditional food packaging typically relies on laminating plastic onto substrates to provide water and oil resistance, but this approach makes recycling significantly more challenging.

DIC develops high-performance coatings for application on film, paper, and other substrates, providing essential performance features that enable the production of highly recyclable mono-material packaging. This innovation supports the creation of packaging that is easier to recycle. The newly established facility—DIC Group’s first in Asia outside Japan dedicated to coatings for direct food contact materials—represents a major milestone in enhancing the Group’s competitiveness in the global sustainable packaging market.

Promoting a circular economy is a core sustainability objective under the DIC Vision 2030 long-term management plan. As part of this strategy, the DIC Group has designated sustainable packaging as a priority business area and is actively broadening its portfolio of materials to meet the needs of next-generation markets. Investment in the new facility enables the Group to deliver locally produced, high-performance products—originally developed in the United States, Europe, and Japan—to markets across Asia, including the PRC, and Oceania, thereby contributing to the growth of sustainable packaging in these regions.

Product Lineup at the New Facility

The new facility will produce high-performance coatings for paper, including HYDRECT®, SunStar DFC OPV/Coating, and others. TThe DIC Group is expanding its product portfolio to include interior coatings specifically designed for direct food contact materials, in addition to exterior coatings intended for non-food contact applications. TThese coatings provide resistance to water and oil and have sealing abilities—features that used to need laminated plastic film—while also being recyclable. Anticipated applications include paperboard lunch boxes, pizza boxes, hamburger wrappers, and paper cups.
