BASF Opens New Production Line for Water-based Dispersions in Heerenveen, Netherlands

BASF established a new manufacturing line for water-based dispersions in Heerenveen, Netherlands. This new line will enhance manufacturing capacity while generating no more CO2 emissions. The enlargement used the existing infrastructure and buildings. The Hollandse Kust Zuid wind farm, operated by BASF in collaboration with Vattenfall and Allianz, will provide green energy to power the facility.

Expansion without increased CO2 emissions

“I am proud that we have achieved this expansion without additional CO2 emissions. Our site aims to become CO2 neutral and to contribute to BASF’s climate protection targets. At the same time, we want to continue to grow to serve our customers with products with a low ecological footprint,” says Sjoerd Visser, Site Manager of BASF’s Heerenveen site.

From plastic to paper and from solvents to water

BASF's products cater to the coatings, printing, and packaging business, which is now experiencing significant changes. Consumers increasingly seek sustainable alternatives. According to Sjoerd Visser, “The expansion will enable us to grow with strategically important products to enable a shift in the value chain from plastic to paper-based packaging and with our water-based products to give them a functional property such as barrier properties. In addition, we will have the opportunity to increase the amount of bio-based products in our portfolio in the printing and packaging industry, as well as in the coatings market.”

Water-based dispersions

The new line will greatly enhance the manufacturing capacity of Joncryl and Acronal Pro, for example. Joncryl, a water-based polymer that is both safe for the environment and food, is utilized in sustainable food packaging inks. The color lasts longer and has a lower environmental impact. Acronal Pro water-based polymers enhance the color and gloss of paints and varnishes, ensuring long-lasting quality.

The existing infrastructure and expertise at the Heerenveen location make it suitable for this investment opportunity. Sjoerd Visser concludes: “These are tough times for our industry in Europe as we are facing the challenges of climate neutrality, circularity, digitalization and the implementation of the EU’s Chemical Strategy for Sustainability. With our innovation team here in Heerenveen, we are committed to tackling these issues. We want to remain an important player in Europe for our customers.”
