Market Overview

The global industrial wood coatings market reached around 2.2 million metric tonnes in 2025, a marginal decline compared to the volumes sold from 2024. All regions experienced decline except Middle East & Africa which saw a moderate growth. The Asia-Pacific region accounts for the large majority of the market with China alone accounting for more than half of the global sales.

In terms of market value, there was a decrease in 2025 to €9.9 billion ($11.2 billion) revenue generated by the market, implying an average price of €4.5 ($5.0) per kilo. The majority of the market value comes from the Asia-Pacific region, followed by the Europe and Americas.

The increase in environmental awareness and promotion of the low-VOC regulations have led to an increase in water-based over the past decades although solvent-based still account for the large majority of the market.

Powder and radiation-cured have been gaining share mostly on the detrimental of solvent-based.

Polyurethanes remain the largest resin type followed by acrylics and nitrocellulose.
